I don’t know about you, but my goodness, do I have a sweet tooth!!
**NOTICE: DUE TO COVID-19 OUTBREAK
THESE BAKERIES MAY BE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE**
I crave so many sweets, and miss out on a lot of my old favorite goodies, that are so frivolously enjoyed by others. And I do admit, I may have been one of those frivolous enjoyers in the past, but I no longer eat any food without mindful eating. When I find my special treats, not only does my heart skip a beat, but I wonder, “Is this too good to be true? Is this real life?” before I sink my teeth into the sweet abyss and savor all the forbidden sugary flavors.
There are 2 bakeries that I love and would reside in, if they’d let me…but for some reason they say it’s against “health-code” or something. LOL - all jokes aside, these bakeries are amazing at what they do and I can’t wait to share them with you, so you can try them for yourself!
- Starry Lane Bakery located in San Diego, CA. (Hillcrest area)
- Dempsey Bakery located in Little Rock, AR. (Downtown area)
I will be putting all the bakery information at the bottom of the page, but for now, I want to dive into the reasons why I love these bakeries!
*First off, it is not easy starting a company based on food allergies.
I know this first hand with Allergy Safe Card. The food allergy market seems a bit niche, even though it’s growing bigger and wider every. single. day.
It’s estimated that 3.1 million Americans follow a gluten free diet, and 72% of those people aren’t diagnosed with Celiac Disease. It is also estimated that 32 million Americans have food allergies and 5.6 million are people under the age of 18. This is a pretty big market, but there’s so little education and awareness on this subject matter, that when people decide to create businesses and companies, I am very grateful.
Starry Lane Bakery
This is a Top 10 Allergen Free bakery. All products are free from: Gluten, Soy, Dairy, Egg, Mustard, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Fish, Shell Fish and Sesame. If you have a corn, sunflower, or rice allergy or intolerance, you may want to steer clear from this bakery, as their products are not intended for you.
My favorite items from this bakery is EVERYTHING, but if I have to choose, then I shall mention their: mocha cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, lemon bars, oatmeal triple chocolate chunk cookies, flatbreads (I turn into pizzas at home), pretzel buns and shortbread cookies. Now these are just some of my favorites. Like I said, I really am not picky and enjoy all of their treats. I am so happy this bakery is only a 15-20 minute drive away from me and I can always rely on this place for a safe treat when celebrating birthdays with friends or craving a sweet treat for myself. You know, “Treat Yo’Self” is a real thing in my house! Find them online at www.starrylanebakery.com
Dempsey Bakery
When I traveled to Arkansas October 2019 for a crystal mining retreat, put on by my baby sister’s company www.moonbodysoul.com - and I became head chef for a day along with another retreater and good friend (...but that's for another blog post!), I was pleasantly surprised to find my next favorite food allergy friendly bakery - Dempsey Bakery in Little Rock, Arkansas.
They offer sweet and savory foods and I was so sad to learn when I arrived that they serve lunch because I had just eaten before visiting. Next time I venture there, I will for sure be visiting this bakery and eating lunch there. They also have the best bread ever!!! I actual came upon this bakery because almost every restaurant that offers gluten free bread options, use Dempsey Bakery bread! If that doesn’t tell you how good it is, then let me tell you!
I had their cheesecake when I visited, which was a new addition to their bakery, and holy moly, was I in cheesecake heaven! Of course it’s all dairy free, gluten free and vegan! When I ate it, I was completely baffled on how they got it to taste so tart like a real cheesecake. Of course I also bought some cookies and bread. We meant to buy the crackers too, but forgot because we got caught up in that cheesecake! (And YES, we did forget to take pictures!)
Their goodies will put you in a trans! - not to mention they've got a cute shop!!
We also learned from the bakery owner herself, Miss Paula Dempsey, that they are now shipping their bread through SYSCO and are in other states. That’s how good their breads are! Check them out online now at www.dempseybakery.com or if you’re lucky enough to go in person, see their address below.
Both of these bakeries will make anyone happy, with or without food allergies. And whether you’re on vacation or living in either of these cities, I highly recommend you check them out. When you do, please visit my Instagram page and tag us both. Let us know your feedback!
Safe Eats,
Allie
